Alexander Cunningham, during his investigations in 1878-79, found in 27-line engraving of tenth century AD referencing Panchapura from which current name Pinjore is inferred. The notice of Panchpura in the Handi stone engravings (1167 AD) likewise appear to allude to this spot.
